There are 3 replies, with the last one on 09/06/2008 at 15:43:06 by Steve Milby
Quote:
The best way to tack a boat is for the winch tailer and the helmsman to coordinate their efforts. If the helmsman stops turning the boat when the genoa is streaming along the leeward rail, then the sail won't be loaded with wind, and the sheet likewise won't be loaded, and the tailer can pull in the sheet by hand, without having to use the winch handle. After the tailer has the sheet pulled in as much as possible, then the helmsman should bear off a few degrees and load up the sail. Then the tailer only has to use the winch handle to fine-trim the sail for the new course.

If you're singlehanding, then you have to figure out how to stop the turn at the appropriate point while steering with your knee (or whatever other appendage you're using to steer the boat).

We looked around local stores and only found Danforth's so I guess that's the most used in our area. We ended up with a 20# danforth with 10' chain on 150' rode, a 13# danforth on the same chain and rode and then we still have what came with the boat. (probably 8#er on 75' rode and 6'chain). I think these should work for us until possibly the day comes we do more cruising and get farther out of the bays and rivers of this area. Hopefully we will get there someday.

I was pondering the merits of a more modern, faster boat versus the security of a full-keel design. Given that I will probably be single handing most of the time, I'm leaning back toward the full keel.

I must admit that I am not familiar with this office but I am capable of learning. My forum ID is KD4AO and my Bio is fairly complete in my User Profile. I am a 70 year old IBM Retiree and have been sailing since about 1970. I crewed in a few race series in Puget Sound out of Shilshole Bay and DesMoines marinas before buying our first boat, a Newport 30 Phase II in 1973. The starboard one would have the arm set outboard & back so the tailed line falls into the cockpit, the port arm would be set inboard and angled forward. You always load a winch clockwise, it would seem to me you'd want to favor your right arm (presuming you're right handed), so crank with your left & tail with your right if necessary.

I've never actually added winches, so take my thoughts with a grain of salt, but it makes sense to me. What have other folks done? I plan to do this at some point, but haven't gotten to it yet.
