My '81 SR has two flanges at the base of the mast attached to the deck into which the mast fits. There is a single bolt which goes through the flanges and the mast which is rusted. I need to replace and I wonder if I take it out will the mast remain in position long enough for me to insert a new bolt? Thanks.

If you knock it out with the new bolt, it should be ok.

And if you can go stainless even better!

I would consider wrapping a few turns of line around the mast base plates just to be safe.

Thanks, Paul. I actually thought about putting a C clamp on the flanges before working on the bolt. And I will definitely use stainless.

A screw driver will suffice, the mast is not going anywhere.

This reminds of a previously owned C22 we purchased. The bolt that held the upper tangs was steel. There were rust stains coming a third of the way down . That was the first maintenance we did on that boat!

You should be able to get the new bolt and wing nut from Catalina Direct, or, if you have one available, a local bolt & screw shop. But definitely replace it with a stainless bolt and wing nut.

I'd go w/ the clamp and also use a hammer and have the new bolt drive the old bolt out...

Boltdepot.com is great to deal with. Everytime I've ordered something it's been in stock and shipped the same day. No minimum order either.

I hope this isnt too late ,, When pulling the bolt out ,you may find the mast may slip down some ,if the bolt is holding the mast up to any degree
