There's not a whole lot of information, but it sounds like they hit a charted reef just before sundown and then had to wait out the night getting pounded by the surf.

They must have multiple redundant nav systems that are state of the art, so how does something like this happen? Even if the watch was asleep (not too likely considering the time of day), the electronics would have been chirping their concern that the reef was approaching.

I can't imagine the impact hitting a reef at 19 knots with the amount of energy it must have been carrying, it's surprising no one was hurt badly.
