So I finally go around to putting it up. I'll update this thread as the project moves along. I put up an 18" Raymarine unit, got the cable run down the outside of the mast and into the cabin through the deck.

Where may I ask are you planning on going sailing? Besides curiosity, Im wondering where folks have taken their 250 water ballasts besides inland lakes?

Cruising with the risk of fog on the Puget Sound would be more comfortable with radar.

It's definitely great to have in fog or darkness. I've also used it to ensure that I don't get inside the USN "security zone" when a sub is entering or leaving Groton or a warship visits New London. If I get inside of 500 yards, I need to slow down to steerage speed and move away. Otherwise, I can be "visited" by a high-speed RIB with a gunner at the bow. Inside of 100 yards and they'll get really testy--I could be fined up to $250,000, and even thrown in prison. 500 yards is hard to judge by sight, but they know... and with radar, I do too.
