found this gem on craigslist. It's sn owner describing the features of his j30. read it and let it sink in.
"Any boat should have Auto Helm Steering~Read on.... What could have been a bad day turned out great! We were caught bringing the J around on a 12 mile run to have the boat lifted. We ran into rain, fog, and it was very cold . It was great to have the Auto Helm 1000 in that situation. We simply set the coarse and went into the comfortable clean cabin, occasionally looking out for crab pots. You can also read the back of the compass from inside the cabin, another great feature! We broke out of the fog and the rain finally stopped. If it wasn't for the Auto helm 1000 we would have been soaked. I would not have a boat without Auto Helm. You can set the Auto Helm for very long cruises. "

...That way you can report your exact heading after you've t-boned the other boat. What other boat?? My point, exactly.
Or what about the tug off to port with the tow off to starboard, both in the fog... ? And what about fog signals?....... Etc.
FOULIES.

I remember about 10 years ago reading about a new power boat owner who on his first time out on the water with his new boat set his course and turned on the auto pilot then went into the cabin to sit and have lunch. The boat drove itself on to a rock jettie. He took the dealership to court claiming that they didn't explain what an auto pilot does.

Mine did... My car speeds up, slows down, and stops with the car ahead in my lane, and steers itself to stay in the lane. Now that I know, I can take a nap!

Ron Burgundy: We've got a job in New York City. Brian Fantana: Hey Ron, who's driving? Ron Burgundy: It's okay. It’s on cruise control. Champ Kind: Why do you have this bag of bowling balls and this terrarium filled with scorpions? Ron Burgundy: It's a crazy story. Brian Fantana: Cruise control just regulates speed. It doesn't steer. Baxter: [barks] Brick Tamland: He says we're all gonna die! [Motorhome crashes] Ron Burgundy: That is going to make one hell of a story.
We've got the Auto Helm 1000 too, in light winds on a long beam reach there's nothing better...lets you move about, move forward and sit atop the cabin, do some minor futzing with some do-dad or such...BUT I've never gone below for more than a moment....
