Last week I got together with two grad school pals and sailed in the skipper's 1980 C25 out onto Block Island Sound over to Cuttyhunk. Hot, sunny, windy days.

Day 1 - Sailed and motored from Norton's at East Greenwich, RI down the Sakonnet River. Forecast was 10-15 kt North winds. Actual winds were South 10-15 kt, and we used a lot of gas getting through the narrow passages on the Sakonnet. Picked up a mooring at 3rd Beach in Newport for the night.

Day 2 - Sailed south past the red "2" bell and then on a course of 90 degrees towards Cuttyhunk Island, MA. Light southerly breezes all the way made for a leisurely sail with lots of snacks, drinks, and laughter. Guess what - Cuttyhunk marina has fresh lobsters, but no showers! (All the 35-50 foot sailboats have showers onboard.) We tied up at John Adam's lobster shack, with help from the harbormaster-chief of police. It's a small island, and there were apparently 2 local students in the one-room school house last year.

Day 3 - Headed back west to Newport, RI on a course of 270 degrees, and into Southwest winds of about 10 kt. Had to tack offshore twice to get around the red "2A" can at the entrance to the Bay. Got a slip and had a nice shower at the Newport Yachting Center.

Day 4 - Shore day in Newport. We rented bikes and rode around Fort Adams, had a drink at the Castle Hill Inn, and rode around the southern end of Aquidneck Island, past some of the famous mansions, and back to the marina for another delightful seafood dinner.

Day 5 - Sailed North into a Northeast breeze back up the Narragansett Bay to East Greenwich.

Easy sailing, challenging sailing, and good times!

Nice story... Yup--Cuttyhunk is "quaint"! But how did the Sakonnet get on your route from E. Greenwich to Newport?

Wait--I see--Third Beach, so you started over on the east side of Newport (not by town, where returned to).

That's right - It's about 5 or so miles shorter sailing eastward from the eastern side of Newport on Aquidneck Island.
