From my daughters in Colorado and the Democratic Republic of the Congo... Four hours yesterday exploring NY Harbor and the lower East and Hudson Rivers with my lady aboard a 37' Tayana cutter in 70 degrees (and very little wind until about the last half hour)...
Lower Manhattan and the Freedom Tower, Ellis Island, Miss Liberty, Governor's Island, the Brooklyn, Manhattan and Williamsburg Bridges, Statten Island Ferries, various fast ferries, tugs and barges, the QE-2,...
Something to cross off my bucket list, and I didn't realize it was on there!
A big plug for Capt. Eric, who lives aboard that boat and is proprieter of Norwhal Yacht Charters--a great young guy, passionate about giving his customers a great experience, living his dream!
The Tayana 37 is a full-keeled, canoe-stern classic that was the predecessor to the Valiant 40, both designed by Bob Perry. It is one of the most popular passagemakers/circumnavigators of all time. Capt. Eric, who "retired" from asset management in his 30s, is planning his circumnavigation once his charter business sets him up for it. As I said, "Living his dream!"
Just noticed the USN hand warmer mug in the first photo. I'm down to my last two (found four in a thrift store in OR, gave one to a friend, placed the other on the hood of my iced over car...melted through, slid and self destructed on my driveway, stupid).
I'd love to find a couple more.
My brother, who was a USN diver, said they used to find hundreds of them alongside the piers when they dove under ships. Apparently sailors would finish their coffee & toss them over the side instead of taking it back to the galley. He's got one...
Oddly, my birthday (Oct 27th) included a surprise family sunset charter aboard a Pearson 34 in Pensacola Bay. The family, the captain and firstmate. I forgot how relaxing it can be to have someone else carrying the captain responsibility.
