The comment they made at the time was about my handheld flares which is now OBE since I have the LED version. But hadn't thought about shooting flares.....I would think using a shooting flare would bring some additional (unwanted) assistance besides rescue reasons. LOL

By the way, I believe there is some specific drone restrictions. Sort of recall some guy was fooling around with a drone and the wind just carried over to the White House vicinity. He received some (unwanted) assistance in retrieving his drone.

I was just being sarcastic.

You cannot fly a drone anywhere in the Washington DC area.

DC No Drone Zone. The National Capital Region is governed by a Special Flight Rules Area ( SFRA ) within a 30-mile radius of Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, which restricts all flights in the greater DC area. The SFRA is divided into a 15-mile radius inner ring and a 30-mile radius outer ring.

Off topic but I recall many years ago, there use to be an RC Club that operated RC submarines in one of the pools near the Mall or Capital, maybe the Reflecting pool. My office back in those days was in Crystal City , VA which is just across the river in VA. But we were moving the office to DC and so I was searching for info on some DC websites and came across some info on RC submarines. By the time our office moved into DC, I never saw anyone using RC boats or submarines in any of the Mall vicinity pools but maybe I just was not around at the right time...or eventually restrictions were put into place.

Cmon Larry, you gotta be putting us on. RC Submarines!!!! Who in their right mind would ...? Oh yeah, it's Washington!!!
But how could you tell if your RC Sub were winning a race, or whatever it was doing, or where it is? You'd see it for a moment, then it would submerge, then it would go somewhere and then you probably would never see it again! What am I missing???

Your post made me laugh - Good start to the work day !!

There are small outfits and individuals that do sell RC Submarines, complete with water ballast systems. They cost something like $200 - over $1000. At one time, I was considering getting one - You know the mechanics of it interest me but when it submerges, how much fun is that since you cannot see it ? and your point....if something goes bad, you may never see it again. Normally, you would use these in a controlled water area, like where you could wade in and retrieve it if it stopped working. I guess you could potentially flag down a Harbor Master if you used it in the bay, but I do not believe they would be diving off their boat to retrieve it.

Ok, point taken. I’d imagine they’d be amazing if you could mount a tiny camera and lens to the sub and get real-time underwater videos. It would be great for tracking down schools of walleyes or looking for lost sunglasses or tools gone overboard.

Here is a website of a typical RC Submarine(s) for purchase as a kit. Website also has info/details on the mechanisms within the sub.
