We saw an ad on craigslist for a lightly used 250 wing keel- 2003 version for $6,000. We called the number and arranged to look at it the next weekend. No one showed up but we found the boat and talked to the marina owner. The owner had been absent since the boat was moved there, and had not used it or registered it for 6 years. They owed over a thousand in back slip rental. We looked the unlocked boat over. It was very dirty, the motor gas can was full of varnish but the interior was dusty and dry. It had wheel steering, the new rudder, wood cabin sole, plumbed toilet, built in charger with 2 batteries, large bimini, external cushions that looked new, stereo with internal and external speakers and upgraded cushions. No bad smells. After checking with the State parks and wildlife webpage, I found out the boat was really a 2000 model. So I called the owner and offered $4,000. She accepted if I paid the marina owner off from the proceeds. We go down next weekend to pay her, and her son shows up and says they can't find the title. I had traced the previous owner on the state website and figured for $4,000 I would chance getting a lost title. So we went ahead. We paid the son, got a bill of sale, and figured we were gambling a little on the title. Texas has a procedure called skip titling when someone takes ownership without a title change, so I started the process. Surprisingly, it was easy and done in 3 weeks. Next up- what we had to do to restore the boat to sailable condition.

Wow Frank! It sounds like you hit the lottery. You'd have to look long and hard before you'd find another nice boat for that price.

Sure hope it works out without any major surprises and only needs some elbow grease and a few more boat bucks. Figure batteries, engine clean up, plumbing up and working and after 7yrs evicting the octopus that took up residents on the bottom. Good luck!

I've seen this movie!

Just finishing rehabbing up a 1999 winger that I got from a yard for a few grand. The yard was owed far more than it was worth. Ours too had been unused for many years, and it was the neglect rather than deliberate injury that had to be repaired. It was so dirty, there were tree seedlings growing in the hatch drains.

Best of luck.
