Has anyone ever counted this? I want to use a sailboat analogy in a speech on something else, as in...even a basic sailboat has over __ things you can adjust to optimize performance.

I guess it depends on how you count some of these. But if we stick to non-spin, which I do, I get about 16, but am probably missing some...and who knows, I might learn something too...

You can add leech line, foot line, downhaul, and sometimes a topping lift is used to help shape the mainsail in very light air.

How about 'attitude'? As in...how much do I care and how much do I want to work today/this afternoon? Some days you want every 1/4 knot of speed you can get...and other days, maximum efficiency matters less...

"Barber hauler" for pulling the jib clew inboard for better pointing, and "twing" for pulling the jib clew downward to reduce twisting off toward the top.
