I took this week - one of the hottest heat waves on record in CT - as vacation so that I could get some great sailing in during solstice time. Longest days of summer.
While it was in the 90°s all week and sunny, the Wind Gods made a nice showing.
On Monday we had easterlies at 12-14 which produced some chop on Long Island Sound, but which propelled me across the waters at 4.5-5.5kts (GPS certified) on about 15° of heel. The sails and the rig were tuned perfectly and it was a blast visiting middle ground/Stratford Shoal and Port Jefferson (16nm) all in a day’s sail.
On Thursday there were southerlies at 10 going out to Branford’s Thimble Islands at 4.5 kts and SSW breezes at 10-15 for the return. We flew back in 3 hours at 5.2 kts.
While it was hot both days (95+ with dew points in the 70°s) we refreshed at anchor with a dip in the 68° water and super blasters aboard. The Bimini kept us out of direct sun - what a lifesaver!!!
This weekend plans to keep up with lively breezes on Saturday and cooler dryer weather on Sunday.

It's been brutal sailing this past week as far as the heat and humidity but the winds have been good. Today (Saturday) is refreshing after the front passed. Bruce, Go early. The wind is predicted to abate as the day goes on.

Scott, thanks for the tip. You’re right, it was very tropical. But nothing compared to Los Angeles’ 115°.
I have this app from Ventusky. It’s also a website.
https://www.ventusky.com/?p=41.058;-73.015;9
It gives you current and future windflows on a national, regional, state or local level.
You’ll notice the arguments provide my Lat Log
I think it was created by the KGB as a bot, but for me it works fine.

I was out on Monday and it was great wind but so hazy around the coast of LI and CT -- much clearer mid sound. Tuesday was brutal, Wednesday so/so had to work Thursday and Friday, but stormy conditions, and today was just about perfect -- low humidity, bright and clear, and wind -- hope for the same tomorrow!

That is a fantastic app. Predicted 12 kt gusts for my mast raising and it was spot on. Luckily they were pretty much straight on the stern.

Sunday the 15th was another great sailing day despite the overcast conditions and yet few were out! Went out with head sail for a quick run and stayed out most of the day!

Peter, not sure what the wind was in your neighborhood, but we got out on Sunday from about noon to five and the wind was SSE between 10-14 with 1.5 ft chop. Nonetheless we averaged about 4.5-5.2 on a beam reach out and back. Put lots of miles under the keel.
The weather scared most of the stinkpotters off but there were more than a few sailors crossing the Sound.
Throughout the day we watched an impressive thunderhead grow and dissipate out east along the Connecticut River, but at no time were we at risk from it. Nice view though. All in all a nice day.

Story of my life... I'm working and watching the leaves blow gently in the sun.

I can create flat rain if I take time off next week off to go sailing.

I am going up to NYC on Thursday 7/19 to sail with lifelong friends on Western Long Island Sound> I am looking forward to good sailing weather. The sailing conditions here in central Florida have been terrible, heat humidity, and thunderstorms. I am hoping for good winds.
