Tell me it ain't so!! It was announced that Catalina Yachts (including True North) was sold in April to Michael Reardon, owner of Daedalus Yachts. The announcement said all staff stays and production will continue in current Largo FL location. Can't say I am surprised once Frank Butler died and Jerry Douglas retired shortly after. Sharon Day is not mentioned in the press release so presumably she too has retired. It appears that Daedalus, located in North Carolina, produces one boat, a fast multihull, now they will have a full lineup -- should they decide to retain them all.

Time will tell how this impacts Catalina service and the lineup of boat offerings.

Shortly after Jerry Douglas retired Catalina announced the "6" series, and introduced a 356 and 316 to replace the 355 and 315. Not sure if any real design changes, my guess just cosmetic to look like new offerings. As Jerry Douglas was THE designer and now retired, I am not sure who they have to design new boats and that may have been a reason the Butler family choose to sell. My son has tons of experience sailing on Gunboats ( a former Reardon company), a line of fast (but fragile) multihulls that deputed about decade ago and foundered about five years ago. The boats were carbon construction (good design) but horrible build quality. How fast? Rye NY (American YC) to Block Island in 6 hours under sail. So hopefully (but not necessarily expected) Reardon will learn boat building techniques from Catalina, and inject some new design approaches into Catalina.

FWIW - While I knew the day would come for the Butlers to sell, I had hoped a more traditional company, such as Tartan, might have been a better fit. But, it is what it is and we shall see!

Peter - Wow! Big news. Good question about retaining the value of the brand. I wonder how the purchase will affect licensing to Catalina Direct and availability of replacement parts?
And what of new models and features?
I believe that Catalina’s latest new model was the C275.
Or had they released other, larger new boats afterwards?

I guess we will have to see if any noticeable changes......hopefully positive ones!! I would think that it is an opportunity for them, the new owners.

On a much smaller scale, when Marinco took over Nicro Vents, I think that was a good move. I have had to change out my Nicrovent every 2-3 years and I got smart early on and purchased West Marine's extended warranty service. Almost every time, the vent failed within the extended warranty and so I was able to get a new one...probably at least 3 times or so. But several years after Marinco purchased Nicrovent, they raised the price significantly but the vents went thru a few mods and not sure but they may have gone to a brushless motor...not sure. But, this time around, I did not make out on the extended warranty service.....This last Nicrovent has been going for at least 4 years ....which is longer than any other past one has lasted!!!

So, good luck to the new Catalina owners and see how things progress!
