First I’d like to wish everyone a very happy 4th of July, and a happy 250th anniversary for our amazing country and its people. We have much to be thankful for.

I was just watching the run up to the Sail4th250 tall ships festival taking place in New York harbor starting today 3-July with the ships sailing from Long Island Sound, through Hell Gate between the Bronx, Queens, and Manhattan, then down the East River underneath the Brooklyn Bridge, past the South Street Seaport out into New York Harbor near Liberty Island, Ellis Island, and Governors Island.

Tomorrow, all the headliners will be sailing into the South Bay of New York, past the New Jersey Highlands and Sandy Hook, through the Verrazano Narrows and under the bridge, and up into New York harbor.

There will be tall ships coming in from all over: the USCG ship, ships from across the USA, Canada, Mexico, Latin America, and Europe for the festival. It’s a wonderful sight to behold.

YouTube will stream much of it, as will individual creators.

Then there’s the fireworks tomorrow night. If you’ve never seen them, you owe it to yourself to open YT on your large screen TV and watch. If you’re in the NYC area, check out WNBC channel 4 for the event!

If you can brave the 90°+ heat, you might watch the spectacle from the Battery Park, Hoboken, or Brooklyn. Stay well hydrated.

And to one and all, no matter where you live. Have a happy Fourth of July! We’re only getting started.

Here’s a video from Boston TV station about the Five Sisters Cup race of four of the remaining five “sisters” including the USCG Vessel Eagle, a German ship, a Portuguese, and one other.
They raced across Long Island Sound, Block Island Sound, Buzzards Bay, and to Boston harbor.

Damn! I sailed out to Middle Ground in Long Island Sound to see the all tall ships as they passed by around 12-noon to two pm. Not one tall ship did I see!

Apparently they were able to sneak past me elsewhere. It could have been that they passed by at 0-dark thirty, or plan to sail tomorrow. My wife told me that most of the boats planned to sail along the south coast close to the Long Island coastline so I could have missed them.

Next stop :: Beantown.

This week, many of the Tall Ships from NYC’s SailFest event will be transiting Long Island Sound between Hell Gate and The Race (west to east) on their way to Boston Harbor’s Sail Boston (https://www.sailboston.com/) event next weekend. (July 11-16).

While we expect heavy rainstorms on Monday and Tuesday, Wednesday’s weather is expected to be warm and sunny, but not hot until Thursday or Friday. On Wednesday, I plan to sail out to the mid-Sound’s Middle Ground light to get a good view of this parade.

It’s not entirely clear whether all boats will transit on Wednesday, however, based on the weather, there’s a pretty good chance I might be correct.

Being about 350 nm between NYC and Boston, it can take the better part of 36 hours to make the passage. I’ll post any photos I can get.

Here’s the Saturday, 4-July TV coverage “with color” from the announcers.

There are many beautiful legacy ships in this category built by several classic boat-builders. Several were constructed in Bilbao Spain and were delivered to Latin American governments during the 20th century.

Sail4th250 the tall ships .

The subject matter experts on the show provided a wealth of information about each ship.

Funny thing, I have several New England sailing buddies who were familiar with some of the Class B ships from Friday’s sail.
