Does anyone have a diagram showing standard boom mount fore and aft reefing lines set up? I inherited what may be a stock setup with fairleads to cockpit, but my manual doesn't show reefing line and topping lift setup, so any visuals or explanations greatly appreciated! Boom has 3 smaller blocks, two clam cleats for 1/4 or 5/16 line, and a couple nylon eyes, if that is helpful.

As islander indicated in the diagram above from Catalina shows a typical.





This is a pretty standard setup I used to conceptualize the rigging while I was thinking out how I would do mine. This is a single line setup which I decided would have more line to catch on things so I went with separate lines fore and aft.

My aft line I used is just as shown in the Catalina diagram.

My fore line is starting on the bottom of the mainsail, tied to the cringle ring ( or tack grommet ) and then up through the reefing cringle ( or reefing Tack Grommet ) and then down to a cheek block on the side of the mast and then down through a block on the mast plate, then though a cheek block on the deck and running down the side of the pop top to a clam cleat near the cockpit.


I keep meaning to add a bullseye after the clam cleat to hold the line in place.

I used the cheek block on the mast to keep the line from rubbing on the pop top when it is up. My halyards are on the forward mast plate blocks and they run clear of it.





I don't use a boom vang as my downwind runs are rather short on this lake with winds that change direction with each island we pass. often its just easier to drop the main and let the jib pull you down the lake, or set the drifter.

On sailboats as old as these, the running rigging you get with a used boat may not be the original configuration.  There are several popular ways to setup a topping lift and reefing, so I second JohnP's suggestion that you provide more detailed info and, if practical, photos.

As for rigging a topping lift and reefing independent of what your boat may already have, I can offer suggestions.

For topping lift I prefer a thin (1/16") wire rope fixed at the masthead, ending at a small bullet block (optionally with becket) a foot or so above the highest anticipated boom height (taking into account standing headroom in the cockpit, poptop, bimini, boom tent, awning, etc).  I suggest not making it too high to reach while standing on a cockpit seat.

From there, some 3/16" polyester double braid through a small cheek block at the aft end of the boom, and either a small padeye, bullet block, 2nd cheek block, or whatever is needed to match the block on the end of the wire.  Then fwd through 2 or 3 small bullseye fairleads along the side of the boom.  I would cleat the topping lift tail near where the reefing will be done from.  On my boat, another cheek block near the gooseneck, down to a turning block at the mast base, outboard to a deck organizer, and back along cabin top to a set control line fairleads and cleats.

I'm a big fan of single line jiffy reefing.  I've seen that method criticized for high friction and poor tension control.  However, I haven't had that problem.  I use 1/4" polyester double braid and all ball bearing blocks, even at the reef tack and clew.


It's important to mount the aft cheek block far enough back on the boom to get the reefed foot tight.  The fixed end of the line can be attached around the boom with a couple turns and a bowline.  That loop can be positioned fwd or aft to adjust the tension angle at the reefed clew.

I think if you show us some photos of your boom and give a description of whether you have single reefing or also double reefing, then we could provide advice on what's what.
