CANPASS IS BACK IN OPERATION, and, if you have one that is still valid, they have extended the expiration date six months. They will, however, be raising the yearly fees to cover the extra expenses they have incurred.

Now for the bad news: You must go to a Designated Reporting Site which is anywhere that the custom folks are located, or nearby where they can inspect your boat. You must report the time you will be at your designated place, just in case they want to search your boat for unwanted terrorists (I made that part up). CANPASS will fax you the latest list in your area.

What it does, however, is give us a speedy way to clear customs without the hassle of waiting for hours for customs agents to search your boat.

Still worth the bucks if you travel to Canada at least twice during the sailing season.

US Customs? You can still call in and use your PIN number to clear customs, but, there is also a problem there. The 800 number is only working sporadically. When I talked to the folks at Friday Harbor, WA. They told me to call them directly if one cannot get through to customs for clearance. They either will give you clearance over the phone or tell you to come to Friday Harbor for a visual inspection.

Anyway, we are actually making progress!!

Doug:

We were there also, but went on the ferry!(and I bet you didn't sail your boat either-as the only Catalina on the docks was a 36 footer from Anacortes!) Weekend was sure wonderful, but Monday was another day with winds howling up in the fifties!!(Betsy was sure happy that we did the ferry thing!)

Did not see your folks, but hope you had a chance to catch part of the Victoria Jazz Festival!! Was on for five days (we were there four) with about 6 sites, around 20 bands from boogie, blues, swamp, dixieland, R and B (a high school group that would knock your socks off!).

Also, had some great stuff at the Imax theater at the museum-including Shackleton's trip!! A movie well worth seeing!!

Take Care
