What type of thread can be used to repair sails. Everyone is on vacation at Catalina Direct -- and local sail stitcher is out for emergency. Help?

Dental floss works well and is probably tougher than the real thing.

In a pinch you can use the wax coated modeling twine used to rig model ships. Works as well or better than dental floss but is not as easily abraided.

Thanks for the suggestions -- But . .. What is the "real kind"? Is dental floss sun resistant or will it break down?

According to Don Casey...

"For permanent sail repairs you need polyester fiber thread-the same kind your sailmaker uses-in either V-69 or V-92 thread weight. If sooner rather than later you are going to have the sail restitched-a very good idea-then almost any heavy duty polyester thread will serve for a season. Never use cotton, nylon or monofilament."

When I had my sail covers redone, the loft used kevlar and promised I would never need repairs again.

What do you all think?

Also, isn't the new "Glide" dental floss made from kevlar?
