I've decided to try out an egg-crate pad on top of the v-berth cushions, heck maybe two. Unfortunately I forgot to take measurements last weekend. Does anyone know off the top of their heads what the width of the v-berth is? Or if you've done the same thing, did you use a king or queen pad? Or if you have a better idea for transforming this part of the cabin into a workable sleep-space for a couple of creaky, overly-used bodies I'm happy to hear it. I searched the archives and didn't see anything that dealt with the measurements. Other than the surface, we like sleeping there with our forward hatch open so we can see the night sky. But too many falls from galloping horses over the years have taken their toll and we need some more cushioning! I sure appreciate all of the excellent ideas you all provide here!
First, I cannot imagine two people sleeping in the Catalina 25 V-berth. This is not a large V-berth. One person would be fine. I sleep in the quarter berth, it is more comfortable, it has an easier motion and is easier to get in and out of. I would recommend that you split up. Now as to padding, I went to SAM'S and bought the Temper-pedic mattress covers. I happen to not have cabin cushions in my quarter berth so I use two of the pads but with cushions one would be enough. The trick is to get oversized single sleeping bags, (they are the size of a twin mattress) and slip the pads into them. You now have a down bed with memory foam in it that will really amaze you. PS I sleep on top of the sleeping bag not in it.
Well for the first time I have to disagree with Frank It depends how big you are as to whether you can sleep in the V-berth. Judy is 4'10" and 95 lbs, I'm 5'5" and 140 lbs and we both sleep there comfortably (with a miniature dachsund for company!). Walmart sells a foam mattress pad that has slits in it to make it more comfortable - it's called Therafoam and it's made by BeautyRest. We bought a queen size and cut it to fit. Derek
Derek, Thanks for the Wally Mart tip I had not run across that particular mattress pad. Until now I've slept on my v-berth cushions with a sheet over them. I'd have to agree it does depend on our and our better halfs girth. Catalina made a pretty narrow passage into the front of there boats. Maybe one day a fine 32-34 footer with a nice wide entrance.
Least we forget the couple of post with the queen size berth spread across the settes made with a hinged ply-wood addition supported underneath with a wooden leg. Nice idea if I ever get around to it. Mike 83 t/r f/k
we sleep 3 in there (me 5-8 and 160 suffer a bit; admiral 4-11.5 is ok; supreme commander 2.5yrs is just fine). we also alternate moving one adult to a settee but eventually all end up in the v-berth somehow (with a mesh "tent" over the open hatch and a small awning suspended over it the v-berth is a lot more pleasant in the summer). The bigger issue seems to be more motion up front, but that's managable at the dock. We'll see hwo that works out at anchor.
I know the admiral took measurememts of the v-berth to make sheets; we'll look fo rthem tonite.
Thanks for all of the help. Frank, I like your mattress! Containing the pads in the sleeping bag is a great idea. However I'm not sure I'm on board with your suggestion that Dave & I split up. We've only been married 20 years Actually we did do the split on a couple of occasions and I think we both slept better. For some reason he ended up back in the v-berth. I might need to remind him about the quarter berth (aka torpedo tube, the cave, the MRI). I have to confess it's very entertaining for me to watch him climb into and get settled in the v-berthIt's quite a spectacle. Derek thanks for the endorsement of the Therafoam, it was one of the candidates so it's good to hear a good report. I'm now armed with all the necessary info to go forth in comfort. Thanks again!
Just got back from 6 weeks of sleeping in the vee berth. Works fine for us as long as its not real hot. Thats hy we go to Canada. North Channel of Lake Huron to be specific. Dave
