I spent the past 2 days coordnating a ARC fundraiser. We were asking for donations at various locations on the base. We raised $20,000!

I guess I am burned out watching the crap on TV and wanted do a small thing, and got the ball rolling. Now the volunteerism is taking off amongst my peers. If America wants to rise above all this mess, It will have to come from the us Americans.

Everyone will have to help fix the problems. See what you can do in the community and TURN the TV OFF.

Tom.

Bravo!
I spent today going thru Volunteer Training and Intro to Disaster Services. 1000 evacuees arrived in town this afternoon. Figure I can use my time more constructively than watching the story unfold on TV.

That is great. I think this could wind up being a great opportunity to rally America for a good cause. If Every chapter of Habitat for Humanity built 5 houses, the shelters could close. I feel this is a prime time to empower people to work and not rely on the Goverment to fix this. We are capable of doing it in the private sector, if we try.
We will have to do it anyways if something REALLY bad happens to us. Might as well "practice" now.

Great going Tom...individuals make all the difference!

I noted earlier your interest in P3's and in this post your citing "ARC". You wouldn't by chance be located at Moffett Field are you? I spent 14 years there (ARC side) back when P3's were flying 24/7 and spent a little time working with an Electra out of Langley. There's no mistaking the sound of those turbo-props passing overhead.

I meant American Red Cross. I am a P-3 Flight Engineer. I am stationed in Jacksonville and am headed to washington next summer. You are right about the big turboprop.

Glad you mentioned Habitat, Tom... I went on their website http://www.habitat.org/ and ran up a credit card balance right away--they're already doing a lot of good down there. We can all easily join the campaign--money is all these agencies need, not "stuff", and Habitat is a lot of bang for the buck.

I made a few friends down at the Red Cross. We went to the Jaguars game and raised $156,000. Not too bad for 2 hours of work. The torture of it all is we HAD to work with the players wives and the CHEERLEADERS!
That is all for now as I need to get the boat back in the water and get ready for the Fall Cruises. I am glad that I am not alone in the desire to help perfect strangers.

I just sent a check to the Church of the Vietnamese Martyrs, in Biloxi MS. A friend of mine grew up there as a refugee, worked the shrimp boats, discriminated against, worked hard, studied, and now he is a doctor. His parents still live there.
Those poor people in that neighborhood got wiped out, but do not get the big media attention, probably because they didn't loot.
Also sent some cash to the Salvation Army.
I'm not a church person, but do believe that the faith based charities are the best there are.
