I'm ready to buy the last few bits and pieces to add a spinnaker to my boat. I'm wondering how long the halyard and sheets should be. My halyard will be led aft to the cabin top. My guess is that the halyard ought to go from the foredeck to the top of the mast, down to the deck, back to the stops with five feet more. The guy at West Marine said ten feet more. Using his measurement, that's 75 feet.

I figure the sheets should be two boatlengths plus 10 feet. That's 60 feet. Does that sound about right?

The concensus is that the lines should be 5/16 in diameter.

Thanks,

Consensus is full of poopy.

Weight is the killer of spinnakers. Speed on the hoist and haul is crucial. You should have 1/4" halyard that has some stretch to it. The stretch is so a puff does not take out your chute, it is much better to have the halyard give a little. The sheets should be the smallest lightest that your sailing gloved hand can hold 1/4" Dyneema or even thinner if you can handle it. The 3/16" is rated at 4000 to well over 5000 lb depending on the brand.layline dyneema
As always, the bottom line is call Layline.com Walt 1 800 542 5463 and get the education straight from them. They will not up sell you to stuff you don't need. tell them what you know, what you don't know and what you want, they will tell you what you should have and why.

My sheets were included in the spinnaker purchase from Sobstad. I am down-sizing from the 5/16" provided to 1/4". Lighter is better.
