I'm in a new boat residence. Second year actually. Last year I had flying insects laying eggs all over the boat. I mean ALL over the boat. They're gone but this year it's something else.

It looks like SOOT. The largest concentration is in the fuel locker but it coats pretty near the aft quarter of the boat. I've had this motor/fuel tank set up since '92 and never had the problem that I'm having now. I cleaned it up today with Clorox Clean-Up. Bleached the heck out of it.

The thought that it might be sewer gasses coming down the creek from the many barges along the creek has entered my mind. Live in type house barges with no sign of sewer hook up.

I'm using West Marine 2 cycle oil the last couple of years and wonder if it might be the culprit.

Can't help wondering what next year holds in store for me.

Has anyone had such a problem?

Diesel soot scrubs off pretty easily with cleaner/detergent.
Black mold spots are really nasty to remove. Softscrub with bleach...

I'm starting to lean towards the crud being alive...bling bling...two votes in black mold's corner. Reason being how well Clorox-Clean-Up handled the problem.

A week or so ago I sprayed things like Fantastic and a spray that I bought to remove bugs from the motor home after the California trip, neither of which had much effect on the crud except perhaps to have accelerated its progress.

I've been seeing alot on TV about folks having problems with black mold but this being my seventy-fifth year on the planet, it's the first that I've come in touch with it. Thank you.

GO CLORINE BLEACH...and thanks responders

I also have what I believe is a black mold problem, and I also have been using bleach. BUT with a little searching on the internet I've come up with some interesting info on the ineffective use of bleach on black mold. http://www.bleach-mold-myth.com/ Good luck
