I'm changing out the water pump impeller on my 87 Yamaha 9.9 hp fourstroke. The impeller looked fine, but what the heck it hasn't been changed in the three years I've owned the motor. Judging from the perfect paint on the lower unit bolts, I'm not sure it's ever been changed. Anyway, with the lower unit off, I observed that the shift rod seal is leaking a bit of gear oil (enough to trickle out the water drainage hole on the leading edge of the lower unit). Is this a problem? I'm having difficulty removing the seal for inspection. There is a single screw, which is easily removed, but I have been unable to then pry the seal off.
By the way, when I last changed the gear oil it was milky white, indicating water intrusion. I attributed that to a torn gasket on the gear oil drainage bolt which I of course replaced. But now I'm wondering if water is getting in through this shift rod gasket.
