Has anyone built boat stands or a cradle to do bottom work? I'd like to put something together so I can paint and work on my swing keel, hopefully this would be sturdy enough to work inside the boat as well. I could use the trailer as part of the support system ... but I shudder at the cost of new boat stands, and despite all the large boats I've seen on 'em, they look flimsy.

Any advice and ideas appreciated.

Hi Greg,

If you already have a trailer, why do you want to use boat stands or build a cradle? Whether your trailer has bunks or rollers, there are ways to prep/paint under them. Is there something about your trailer that would keep you from doing the bottom while the boat is on the trailer?

Even if you want to get better access to the swing keel, you could still use your trailer and lower the keel using the "threaded rod" technique:

Maybe you've got some mitigating circumstances I haven't thought about, but it sure is easier to do the work on the trailer (if you've got one).

Good luck with your project!

Thanks Buzz ... I guess I was thinking getting around the bunks to do the prep and paint would be more difficult than using stands, if stands could be had/constructed economically. How does one get around them? I picture jacking the boat up and supporting it off the bunks somehow ... I don't think I've even seen that portion of the boat under the bunks.

Hi Greg,

Well, I was hoping you'd say you had a trailer with rollers ... painting underneath banks of rollers is easier than getting around bunks.

My trailer has rollers, so I don't have experience with painting underneath bunks. I seem to recall that someone used temporary supports on one side of the boat at a time, and then lowered the bunks to do the prep/paint work underneath them.

I'll search the archives and see if I can find that info. The Forum search function and I have never gotten along, but maybe I'll get lucky. In the mean time, maybe someone who has a trailer with bunks will see this thread and reply.

I'm off to curse at ... errr ... use the search function ...

Edit: OK ... that wasn't as painful as past search attempts.

Take a look at this thread, it should help: Bottom paint/prep There is a lot of discussion of types of bottom paint, but there is also some good info on how others have painted their boats while they sat on the trailer.

'Hope that helps ... good luck!
