I am looking for advice on how best to clean sails. There are no professional sail cleaners in our area, so I would like to attempt the job myself. What type of cleaning materials and compounds do you like? Does any one know what the professional's use? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Interesting article. If I were going to try to clean my own sails, I think I'd use this as a basis.

I had a bird deposit stuff all over the sails while sailing. After hosing it off, there were still ugly black spots. I lowered the sails to the deck. As I raised them up, I scrubbed with dish soap and water. I used cleanser on the black spots. Then I hosed everything off really good. Looks like new and no ill effects. Dacron sails.

When a tree leaked onto our sails, we cleaned them using oxyclean. left soaking for about 5 mins, little rub-a-dub-dub with a soft scrub brush and they came out pretty good.

I you'd rather have someone clean them for you, I recommend this place: http://www.sailcare.com/.
Ship your sails to them over the winter. You'll need sunglasses to look at 'em when they come back! I was very impressed with their work.
