Ahoy. This is my first post as a new Catalina 25 (1983) owner. I would like to replace the motor and bracket that came with the boat and am trying to figure out the shaft length I need and the vertical travel of the bracket I need. I think the Johnson 9.9hp Sailmaster currently on the boat is a 25" shaft, but it still cavitates easily in small waves. The Garelick brackets I am considering have a vertical travel of 9.5", 13.5" and 15.5". Can anyone tell me what a good combination of shaft length and bracket would be for the C25?

I have the heavy duty Garelick - 9.5" that is rock solid but does not have enough travel. If I had it to do again, it would be the 13.5. I have a Honda 10 w/ 20" shaft. Not sure what your previous boating experience is but cavitating OB's are pretty common. It doesn't take much to get our 22-25 foot boats to pitch 10 - 15".
Get an XL shaft engine for sure. I've not measured the travel on my Garhauer mount, but I'd guess it's around 15"... which is adequate. It get's the motor out of the water completely (when tilted on the first notch) and puts it as deep as you'd want at the bottom of its travel.
I have owned both the Biggest Garelick and the biggest Garhauer. Do not buy the Garelick, Garelick is all about vertical travel up from horizontal, none of them go down below horizontal worth a hoot. The Garhauer is designed for our boats and has both excellent vertical up and down travel. I have the new 4 spring with a Honda 4 stroke and it is perfectly balanced and functions exactly as needed. I put the motor both down and up with one hand. Big Garelick Big Garhauer

How fortunate you are to be replacing motor and bracket at the get go. Frank's suggestion to go with the new Garhauer is a good one, I'd only add that you want the 15.5" travel model. Combined with the motor's shaft length of not less than 25 " will be an excellent combination.
I currently have a Sailmaster electric start 25" that I am replacing. I've chosen the Tohatsu/Nissan 9.8, four stroke, 25" with electric start and alternator weighing in at approx. 81 lbs. It gets excellent reviews here and the price is right. The one I ordered was $ 1949. About as right priced as I am aware of.
