I am going to go through the C&D canal (West to East). My boat is C27 and I plan to motor all the way. If any of you folks has done it, I’d appreciate ANY info (attractions, timing, ~gas/mile (I have A4 inboard), etc.
I've been through a number of times. There's not much of any place to stop other than Chesapeake City- Schaeffer's Canal house is the landmark there and there is a small anchorage. The town is worth visiting, although I never stopped there when transiting the canal. Make sure you have the tide and current tables for the day because this makes quite a difference in planning. If you are traveling eastward through the canal and then heading south down the Delaware, then a foul current in the canal will mean a fair current in the Delaware.
My log from my last trip in 2002 indicates I left the Bohemia River (just outside the western entrance of the C&D) at 10 am and exited the eastern end of the canal by 2:00 PM. The current turned foul halfway through the canal and I was motoring hard to make 3.5 knots over the ground (about 2 knot current).
If you are also heading south on the D, make sure you have a plan on where to stop for overnight, because there aren't a lot of options and it's a long hard run to Cape May.
