Silly question but I lost my hat 10 miles offshore in Lake Michigan at about 2:00 in the morning. I really liked that hat and don't remember where I got it. It was blue with the C-25 diamond logo on the front and boat name embriodered on the back. Any help would be appreciated.

Ed,

This brings back memories of when I was at the Naval Training Center at Great Lakes. Something similar occured.
I bought this neat divers watch at the ship's store. Had one of those clamshell wrist bands that slid off and on rather easily, sometimes even when you weren't aware it was doing so. Well I went swimming in The lake at Racine ( I think) and realized when I came out of the water that my new watch was some where in Lake Michigan. DRAT
I gave up on that watch but not the beach where I had been swimming and on another occasion when swimming at the same location stepped on what I thought was a clamm shell, cutting my foot. Thinking I'd save someone else the possibility of injuring themselves I dove and in an attempt to remove the clam shell found the watch that I had lost on the previous liberty. To this day I'd advise a fellow to not give up in the search of lost property, remaining ever hopeful that your loss might show up.

But in your case FURGEDDABOUTIT.

When they drain San Francisco Bay for maintenance they will find of mine two nondescript baseball caps, two pairs of sunglasses, my wife's visor, a stocking cap and my Mallorca sailing cap (that I really miss).

Oh, and about two pounds of misc. metal...screws, nuts, bolts.

Now I have a "goofy hat" with a chin and neck string. It looks goofy but won't come off. Shaped like my jungle hat from the army, just blue.

One head's lost is another's gain. While sailing the Chesapeake this summer I noticed what looked like a dead fish floating. Then getting closer it looked like a big jelly fish, then we saw it was a Tilley hat - yes they do float - at least long enough for algae to grow on it. We rescued it - scrubbed it with boat soap and a brush - most of the algae came off, then some Oxy-clean and bleach and it is in near new condition. Turned out to be a great "hat overboard drill". Now it graces my head.

3 weeks ago, I offered up my cell phone to the undersea gods! A week after that, the gods got greedy and took my port side winch!

Well, Ed, your hat almost certainly came from our Ships Store. The Store is now closed due to the lack of a Quartermaster. We are working on sending our logos to Lands End or some place like that so you can order direct.

If you would like to volunteer for a Staff position as Quartermaster I think the Association would pony up for a new hat for you on us.

What?! The whole winch, and not just the winch handle?

How did that happen? 'Makes me want to check the mounting hardware and backing plates on my winches.

I started this thread about my lost hat. I didn't bother mentioning my Rolex that I lost overboard two years ago. At least, it was insured

Yes, most of my port winch went overboard and I wasn't even around when it happened.

It was due to an unusual weather pattern a few weeks ago that caused the water at my end of Lake Erie to shuffle off to Buffalo on the eastern side leaving most of the boats in my marina either sitting in the mud or hanging from our fixed concrete and steel docks. One of my docklines was looped on my winch and when the water level dropped several feet, my boat was probably dangling from my winch which broke the winch's nylon center stem, sending the Lewmar 7 winch drum over the side. Fortunately I had an unused winch on the cabintop that I transferred to the coaming to get me thru the rest of the season.

Sorry you lost your hat Ed, but you might think about having a hat custom embroidered. My wife and I did that for our "sailing" jackets. I created the C25 logo in Photoshop and they look great. I could even give you the name of little shop that did the work, that way you wouldn't have to pay for a "setup" charge. Just pick a hat from a catalog and there you go.

I'm not trying to take anything away from the Ship's Store, but if no one is able to operate it then this might be a viable alternative. Let me know if you'd like the logo I made or the information for the embroidery shop.

I have two small C25 diamond logos from a PO. I'm willing to let go of them to the highest bidder! Ed, would you like to start?

I use one of those when racing John, but we are really only teasing the water gods. They need to be fed at least one hat, one stainless fastener and an occasional winch handle every year. That's just how it works.

As for Tilley hats, we were sitting in the middle of a regatta in about 0 kts of wind and even less current when one of the guys spotted a hat about half mile away. He dove in swam to the hat and was back on the boat long before we all got sunburn and they called the race. The one thing about the Tilley hat is the little pocket inside where you can keep your name and address info or any other items you might like. Turned out that our crazy swimmer new a guy who new the guy who owned the hat. After a full season of sun protection, he returned it this fall.

I have always been tempted by the Tilley, but have noticed that their owners are invariably male, middle aged, balding and pudgy. Since I too fit this description I am looking for another solution rather than give further credability to this creadence.

They are also invariably from the US - Maybe you can start a new trend up north?
Although I know a number of thin young gentlemen who wear the hat and get lots of chicks too....

Maybe it's the ladies that make the bald middle aged pudgy guys do it? You could actually be missing out?

Can't you just picture Neptune sitting on his throne with your C25 ball cap, surrounded by millions of hats?

Forgot to mention that he's also wearing one of my teva sandals, using a pair of new vise grips...not sure what he's doing with that bottom half of my rudder though
