After using the stock boarding ladder this summer for a swim ladder I wanted to add an extension to make it easier to climb aboard so I added on. Any suggestions for better method of adding on an extra length.

eBay has a lot of different things of that ilk, you may get some ideas there. eBaymotors search this area

This looks like it might bolt on as a folding extension

Another option although not as easy or cheap as adding an extension would be to replace the ladder. I chose this platform and ladder combination. Once installed it will give me a more secure step over the rails and a little over 2 feet under the water with the bottom 3 rungs submerged. This is approximately an additional 10" over the original.

I ordered the parts from West Marine. The platform is part # 391294 for $89.99. The ladder is part # 5497060 for $154.99.
I chose the I/O ladder as it gives you two grab rails above.

3 coats of Cetol light and 3 coats of Cetol overcoat should protect it for some time. There was some concern as to whether it will interfere with the rudder but with some careful measuring we determined it wasn't a factor. The next step is to fill the 6 holes from the OE ladder and do some gelcoat repair before installing.

BTW, anyone in the market for a vintage 84 Catalina boarding ladder?

We'd appreciate it, if you could post a picture after you've completed your install.

Will do.

I'm in the middle of upgrading/replacing most components on the boat. I'll post some pics of the swim platform soon and once I'm done with all the projects I was going to put some of them in the Tech Tips forum.

BTW, I just finished raising my mast singlehanded with my A-frame in the parking lot outside the shop. It makes it sooo easy I would have taken photos but I did it in the dark

What... no takers on my slightly used stock ladder?

I see that you at least added the pads to the ladder rungs. That was on my to do list if I did not replace the entire thing first!

What a great idea. It would also make a fantastic place to store an extra gas can. Can't wait to see the finished product.

Tom.

To those of you who responded both in the forum and to my personal e-mail regarding my stock ladder,

I apologize for the delay. I will check with the shipping location tommorrow to see what it will take to ship it and contact each of you again to see if you are still interested.
