Anyone have any advice on how to 'easily' remove the water from the fresh water tank for the winter? I keep my boat in the water (Alabama, not too cold). Should I simply pump it (by hand?) out or do I need to put something in the tank / lines to prevent damage?

Are you draining the tanks because of non-use or are you concerned about freeze damage?

If you're concerned about freezing, based on the two winters I spent on the gulf coast, I don't think you have anything to worry about.

I plan on using the boat probably more this winter than the summer (better weather, cooler, wind etc) so I would like to continue using the tank. You don't think it will freeze? I am not as worried about the tank as maybe the supply lines. I live in north Alabama so we do occasionally get freezing weather (last night was down to 34 degrees).

Until I got pressure water I never really did find a good way to empty the tank at the end of the winter except to pump 'till it was dry. You'll probably be fine leaving the water in - even if it gets below freezing outside it'll be a little warmer inside the boat - after all its sitting in warmer water. Also, if you don't have pressure water & just have the hand pumps then I don't think too much water stays in the lines.

You could also buy a small ceramic heater with a "snow" setting - it turns on when the inside boat temp drops to 41 degrees. Caframo make an excellent one (they also make WM's models). I use one even here in Central Texas as the boat, sitting on a hoist, takes on the air temp rather than the water's!

I use the problaster pump that I installed from the tech tips. Tank is pumped dry and then I add the special anti freeze (West Marine) to protect the valves and lines. We had a bad freeze here a couple of years ago and the valve under the head sink cracked. . Did not realize it until the next spring while filling the tank up. It all went to the bilge. Again the blaster came in handy to pump the bilge out. . It has many uses-washdown, cooling off, even hook it up to a mister line hung around bimini on real hot humid days.
