Couple weeks ago while on the Cumberland Island cruise with fleet 25, I discovered I needed a longer lower unit. When we were motoring across the bar in high winds we were heeling over on the port side 15-20 degrees (with no sails up) the motor would come out the water. I thought I had a 25" shaft, after talking with Tohatsu people I discover its only 20". Seems you measure a Tohatsu a little different. I always thought it measured from the transom clamp to the Anti Ventilation Plate. The Tohatsu people told me to measure from the Transom clamp to the lip or area where the lower unit bolts onto the exhaust housing, which is the lip above the Anti Ventilation Plate. This explains why some people measured their 25" shafts and found a 28" reading. All this being said, Tohatsu sells a kit to go from a 20" inch to a 25" length for $200. I'll be ordering one in the morning and add that project to my winter to do list.
A lucky break for you, that Tohatsu has that kit available for a relatively affordable price. My previous C-25, #1205, had a Honda 10 with a 20" shaft, and it would often cavitate if the boat heeled only a few degrees to the side away from the motor.

I'm about to save you $150.00. If you go to ebay and the people who sell all the inflatables and Nissan outboards (I think it's Avalon or something like that have those kits for $39.95. It's NOS (New Old Stock). I bought one but have not installed it yet. They claim it only fits a 9.8 long shaft 2 stroke. I looked at the pictures over and over again and checked the parts book and it certainly looks like it will fit an 8 HP long shaft 2 stroke as well. Only fits long shaft motors and is supposed to turn them into an extra long shaft. I felt it was worth the gamble.....if it doesn't fit i'll put it back on ebay!!!!
I called Tohatsu in Texas and they told me I needed part number 3B2N873140 and a engine base gasket, because I have to pull the power head to make the change. I saw that one on E-Bay last night and e-mailed them, its's part number is 62873140M and they told me it would not fit(but they had one that would for $299). I went ahead and ordered the 3B2 part number today from my local Tohatsu dealer for $204. Let me know if yours works then I can kick myself if it does.
The housings will bolt up. the problem will be the driveshaft, water tube, and shift rod will be too short. A good machinist could overcome those hurdles. Another problem would be the overall torque from the prop now being 30 inches vice 25 from the transom. Could break something. I dont think is a good idea.

Hmmmm. Bolting multiple extension kits together to make an extra-extra-extra longshaft sounds like the sort of thing Jamie and Adam would do on "Mythbusters"
Its done! I now have a Extra Long Lower Unit. I ordered the kit and did the install this past weekend, you can see the extension is a different shade of grey. I changed out the water pump while I was at it.
I have a longshaft 1984 Honda BF7.5 that I want to change to a regular or short shaft. (the Honda was used on a Cat25, but I want to use it on my tender now)
If anyone wants to consider a swap in lower ends, send me an email message to discuss in greater detail..
