Call around to foam suppliers in your area. You want to find "Airex"; this is a high-density closed-cell foam product that makes excellent cockpit cushions. It comes in large sheets from the manufacturer, you tell the supplier how much you want and they will slice off that amount for you. 1.5" to 2.5" thickness is best. Once you have your foam, you should make a cover for it out of marine vinyl upholstery material, this can be purchased from any fabric store. If you aren't handy sewing your own stuff, any marine canvas or upholstery shop can do it. Airex is completely waterproof, won't mildew, and is very firm; it will provide support for your tired tush for as many hours as you might want to be out sailing. If you have seen "bottomsiders" cockpit cushions on someone else's boat, they are made from a closd cell foam product very similar to Airex. Or you could just buy bottomsiders. Personally, I think they are too thin, but they might be enough for you. You can order them through West Marine or Boat US, I think. The cushions for my boat are 2" thick Airex, 16" wide x 72" long, and I paid about $45 each for the 2 pieces of foam, plus about $30 worth of marine vinyl and zippers for the covers.
Great info on the foam. I was considering another type I found at this store that does not hold water. I do like the idea of a cushion that will float. It could be a nice sized marker for a MOB!
This site has all kinds of stuff for marine type applications. Here is a link to some fabric I plan on ordering for cockpit cushions. Look under textiles and then screens and mesh.
I like the idea of making your own cushions, but consider the Catalina alternative (or did you look into it already and didn't like what you heard). Our purchase from Catalina was too simple: 2 boat units for a set of perfect-fitting cockpit cushions that still looks like new five years later.
I replied in the other thread as well. Check out this vendor, although I have no experinece with them, they appear to have reasonably priced cockpit cushions.
