While doing a little Christmas shopping at Best Buy I noticed they have the Captain Ron DVD for only 7 bucks, so I bought myself a little christmas present.

Frank,

Outstanding find! Perhaps you should have stocked up on them for the rest of your Christmas shopping list. I can't imagine anyone deserving of a gift not appreciating a copy of Captain Ron!

I read this post as I am watching "Capt. Ron" on stars. I have two copies. I think I got at walmart for about that price a year or two ago. Most of my friends have seen the movie and those close to me understand the attraction of it. People who are not around sailors sometimes miss the points that only sailors "get". It is still one of my favorites and good to watch on a cold rainy night in Georgia. "Well, let's just get some cigars and relax." Think I will.

I can't even tell you the number of times Dave & I toss Captain Ron lines back & forth. We've forced it on many friends much to their delight. That way their up to speed when they come out for a sail with us! "Don't worry it could happen to anyone". I had a hard time even finding "Wind" anywhere. Our local Hollywood store only had one VHS copy available for rent! I ended up ordering it from Latts & Atts for Dave's birthday. I'm still looking for a dvd of "Six Days, Seven Nights", no sailing, but a fun tropical fix when it's cold & rainy in the PNW.

Hi:

I'm not familiar with the Captain Ron videos. I will have to check them out. They are available at Amazon.com for $7.99.

Will,

the Captain Ron video presents a wide ranging tutorial on sailboat ownership, developing seamanship skills, crew teamwork, and Caribbean cruising in an anecdotal format. Many find it provides a useful orientation for inexperienced prospective crew members.

It is a comedy
Captain Ron, Kurt Russell, Martin Short, Mary Kay Place,
Kurt is a captain for hire with much personal and professional baggage and a certain genesequa. (He specializes in using OPM.)Martin Short sucks, Mary Kay Place was cute and very nice to watch, (probably the only time one could say that). It is essentially a Disney movie that Short very nearly ruins with his over the top schtick. However, Kurt Russell is really good, totally gets it and makes the movie a sailing cult classic. Just go to the bathroom or go make a drink when you sense a Martin Short scene coming.

I thought it interesting that on the surface, Captain Ron was portrayed to be a poor navigator. But time and again the "problems" with the currents and tides, amazingly, proved to be beneficial...ie. "Babe, who you waving at?"

Or when the kid tells the General, through the interpreter, that "s__t happens, cough it up."

It is a great sight when the boat finally got under sail and they killed the motor...or the parallel park job, fun movie.
