Does anyone have and uses a cruising spinnaker? If so, where did you get it and how do you rig it? What's the difference between a cruising spinnaker and an asymetrical spinnacker? Thanks.

Go to page 4 of the C250 forum and you will see a discussion of how I rigged my boat and the recommendations of others. In Tech Tips you will find Arlyn's boat. Since I am not a racer, I was not concerned about racing rules when I set up my rig. I found the use of a tacker that is run back to the cockpit and a chute scoup that is controled by a cleat on the mast and a snatch block hooked to the base of the mast to be ideal. The only change that I was planning to make was to rig a deck opener for the forward hatch and a clip on mount for the turttle bag so I could drop the whole thing through the hatch and into the bag in the V birth. This project is going to have to wait since my health went south in October.

I believe that 'cruising spinnaker' and 'assymetric spinnaker' and 'gennaker' are used somewhat interchangably. All of these terms refer to a large foresail of light sailcloth that is attached at the head and the tack and that is used on a broad reach or downwind. Some (many?) racers also use these sails, and I'm sure they wouldn't refer to them as CRUISING spinnakers.

I bought my assymetric from Air Force Sails. I chose that firm because they had the cheapest one that I could find, but now that I have it, I am very happy with the sail.

Rigging is pretty straightforward. Mine is attached to the stem fitting and the genoa halyard, and I led two sheets to blocks above the two cockpit cubbies. However, with some extras like a downhaul (better tuning) and a chute scoop (ease of handling) you can improve your sail's performance and ease of use.

It is a fun sail, but takes some getting used to and -- at least in my hands -- takes some practice with interested crew. Make sure the wind is LIGHT the first time you play with it.
