I reread the manual again last night and came up with the following on page 45,9-4, Preseason check.(1) check that the shift and throttle function properly. ( be sure to turn the propeller shaft when checking the shift function or else the shift linkage MAY be damaged).
I'm not entirely sure, but I seem to remember on previous outboards (non-Nissan), when I couldn't easily move the shift lever to a gear or it just wouldn't go period, I could just pull slowly on the pull cord (engine is shut down) while gently holding the shift lever either forward or backward to allow it to drop in gear. It seems this would do the same as rotating the prop.
I seem to think that this a one time only proceedure, "preseason proceedure" I did all this when the motor was first received and runin in the garage in a bucket of water. There has never been any difficulty (resistance) shifting since. I assume all is well in this regard.
