That is why I asked for someone smarter than I regarding the inherent stability of a round bottom boat with no ballast.
I figured that with the mast up, someone boarding the boat would flip her like a hamburger.
As for measuring the waterline, I have never seen a Cat 25 more than a few inches above the factory bootstripe in an unloaded state. Just taking my outboard off raises the stern a good 2 inches. Something like 6 inches above the waterline would indicate a....ummm missing keel.
If there is a boatramp, you could gently pull the boat up to the ramp and feel around. Without a keel, it will only draw a few inches.
I am very curious about this one as I always figured the boat would turtle if it suddenly shed a keel.
Can you send a picture of the boat sitting in the water?
Barry, I agree with Tom and suggest caution rule before motoring. We had a very tragic accident here on Lake Champlain a couple of summers ago when the skipper of a Hunter 26(?) failed to fill the water ballast tanks. On motoring back to their slip after dark with little to no wind or waves, the boat flipped. The 3 adults in the cockpit survived; the two kids in the cabin did not. The skipper was ultimately charged with negligent homicide.

Maybe you should install a large floatie at the top of the mast so when she flips, she'll only go 90 degrees.
Tom, I live in the woods and the only internet access is dial-up. Photos are a huge promblem with dial up and I must post photos to another websight and give the websight addy for others to view. I do not know how to do this. I wish this board would accept photos somehow. Glive, Horrible tragedy!!! Seems strange they were returning when this happened and not while using the boat that day.
I weigh 225 lbs., went to the slip today and tried to overturn the Cat 25. I did not even get close!!! I know for positive the keel is gone and rechecking how the boat sits in the water...I can see about 4 inches of bottom paint sticking out of the water!!! This boat is NOT floating on very much water. To hear this, one would easily assume the boat will fall over but it doesn't. Again, I tried to flip it and couldn't.
