Hi All, I have seen pics of how to run the single reefing lines. All the ones I have seen tie off at the end of the boom then up through the reef then down to a shive on the boom then forward to another shive then up through a reef then down to the mast. From there some are fed back to the cockpit and some or tied off at the mast. Why can't I do it this way; tie off on the boom in front then up through a reef then back down to a block on the boom then back to a block at the back of the boom then up through the back reef then down to a tie off. So the working end of the line would be on the boom right above the cockpit. Also, I would put two Cunningham hooks on the line between the two blocks from front to back and use those for the second reefs when needed. Do you think this would work? Cheers,.
The only issue I see with tying off the reefing line at the aft end of the boom is, if conditions warrant putting in a reef, then they are such that the boom might be dancing around quite a bit while putting in the reef.
Usually when reefing under way, you will sheet out the mainsail until it luffs so that there won't be any friction along the luff of the main. When you do that, the aft end of the boom may be well outside the cockpit. It would be dangerous to lean over the lee side rail to try to pull in the reefing line.
