We held our Frostbite on saturday on Canyon Lake. Temp at the start was 45 degreesm rising to 54 by the finish. The wind started at 15 from the North and finished at about 7. We raced against a Sabre 362, a Hunter 37.5, an Ericson 35, a Spirit 28 and a Columbia 8.3. There was much discussion at the Skipper's meeting on how to handicap "This Side Up" (we had to enter the Cruiser Fleet as no other Non-Spins showed up!) and finally decided that we should only run a 105 jib and a reefed main... Race 1 we won handily. Race 2 was a disaster from the start where we got stuck between the 2 biggest boats and we seemed to find every header on the lake - but we still managed to eke out a 2nd (just 9 seconds ahead of the Columbia). Race 3 went a little better but was only a shorter "Y" course, and with the dropping wind we were underpowered and had another second (I even tried throwing a false tack at the Sabre - which almost worked...) The Sabre 362 won races 2 & 3 after a 2nd in Race 1 and won the trophy! (It is a darn fast boat) All in all, a great time was had by all. Derek

Derek-- Just a little kind of stupid questiion. I sailed for a lot of years, and am just now getting back into it after 14 years, but have never been in a sailboat race in my life, excepting two of what they call the "hot dog regattas" at the marina here, and aboard somebody else's boat at that. Still, I wonder, If I should become interested, just how competitive can a C25 be? Would I be kidding myself? I'm more or less rebuilding this old lady (1979 SR FK) and have only sailed her once, and yet she seems pretty nimble to me, and balances quite nicely. Is it worth going out there? I hope I didn't open the proverbial can of worms here.
CR - I beleieve that the C25 can be VERY competitive. I've raced mine for about 14 years now and have beaten (at various times!) bigger Catalinas, J24's, J27's, Solings, any size Hunters and the C250's,in fact virtually every boat on the lake - and been beaten by them too! However, the boat is on a hoist and has a well prepped hull with VC-17 Offshore. I run with new jibs and a 6-year old main - and most important, a wonderful knowlegeable crew. I also run with much looser tuned rigging than anyone else...our winds are relatively light compared to other venues (Especially Lake Cheney )we seldom race in more than 15 knots. I'd suggest you go out and have fun! Derek
