I'm now in the process of considering some more substancial ground tackle for my 2003 250.The boat has no roller and the standard Danforth with 10 feet of chain.I'm more interested in a bow pulpit installation or hanging it off the roller.I would appreciate any ideas.I've really never have been happy with the Danforth.I anchor mostly in sand and mud but sometimes rock.I'm also considering a winch on the bow.I would appreciate pictures if available
Thank you in advance,
Steve

Steve,
If you are considering a bow roller and winch, you may consider converting to all chain.
With 200 feet of chain, you can remove some of those sandbags under the v-berth.

Steve, I agree with your concern for adding another anchor. I sure like a bruce or clone and the 16 lb version seems to work quite nicely.

The 250 doesn't have an ideal design for a beefed up bow anchor roller. One might be successfull if trailering is not an issue in part because an anchor roller would need to be centered to help avoid setting up the conditions for hunting at anchor and I'm not sure enough space exist between the bow and the trailer mast raising system.

There just isn't a lot of mounting surfaces do get the strength needed for an active roller. I think most of those who have installed a roller, use it for storage or for setting / hoisting rather than riding to it.

The anchor locker is actually big enough for both a 16lb claw and a 13lb danforth plus 200' of chain and 1/2" rode for both. It is however a tight fit and needs methodical disciplined stowage. I go this route and anchor from 15-25 times a season and don't find it any problem. If one is anchoring every weekend, this approach might be too tedious.

Some have elected to put the bruce in the locker and use a bow rack for the danforth. That configuration would not be a big issue storing rode for both and would save the step of my method, which requires stetting the danforth aside on the deck while setting / stowing the claw.

I wouldn't consider all chain rode without a windlass and again with the problem of getting a beefy enough roller that makes that route very problematic for the 250.

If handing the rode while hoisting is a problem, a simple method works well that might save the need or effort in going with a roller. I've used a technique a couple of times and it works very well and is easy to do. Simply lash a loop of line around the bow pulpit, throw a snatch block on the rode and snap the shackle to the loop of line and carry the rode back to a sheet winch. This method once brought up a ten inch water logged piling the rode had wrapped around, which was far too heavy to man handle. Every cruiser should have a snatch block aboard for various contingencies but a regular block will work, simply go all the way to the bitter end of rode to feed it on.

FWIW: I traded the Danforth for a UK Bruce. With 25' of chain and 180' of line, it works quite well on all terrain bottoms. Also, I have a small Danforth, chain, and rode in the aft port lazerette for a "lunch hook". I installed a small 45 buck roller on the starboard side of the CDI furler and bolted it in. Pic forthcoming.

Steve,
When you wrote "winch" I thought you meant "windlass".
Yes, 200 feet of chain without a windlass is a real hassle.
Arlyn brings up a good point about not enough room for a beefy anchor roller.
