i have a 8.8 hp 4cyl engine and have had the "ape attack " on the throttle control. to better explain when you twist the throttle you can control the drag by tightening this larger cup to hold the speed.
i think i may have stripped the threadm inside. when i tighten it just plips..
i took the grip handle off the motor and noticed that if i really push on it i can get it tighten the grip.
is this normal?? anybody else had this problem?? if so, what do i do.
Should i just go buy a new one?
thanks in advance

Dave, My 9.9 Honda does the same thing. I keep fiddling with it until I get the large cup tight and the throttle doesn't back down to idle. I think exerting a little outward pressure on the big cup while turning it gets it to tighten. However, if you keep turning after it feels tight it will "slip" again.
I guess I should ask the dealer if this is normal. But after I get it adjusted, the problem floats to the back of my mind and I don't think about it until the next time it gets loose.
This usually happens while I'm motoring in the channel near the jetties. Then it really gets fun.
Probably not a stripped thread. I suspect Honda engineered a slip-ratchet mechanism to prevent you from stripping them. You're hearing that mechanism give. Apparently they didn't get it figured completely right.
Honda has issued a replacement for that throttle damper cup. If your engine is a 2003 or older--maybe even a 2004--you should get the new one. I think I got mine under warranty--it fixed the problem just fine. Check with your dealer.
