Hello everyone, as the winter months are passing by I am finding myself on Ebay and every other kind of place where I think I can get "The DEAL" and buying up all kinds of stuff (CRAP I dont really need for the boat). I was wondering if you all have the same problems as I do. Some how it makes me feel like I am doing something to stay active in the sailing world. My last buy was 2 coats for foul weather, as these are always need when it is raining outside, I seemed to buy the ones that have the CO2 PDF built into them. Now I am sure these will come in handy some day but for a lake sailor I dont think that the winds will kick up enough to really put these jackets to use. I have seen other jackets of this style go for over 300.00 per jacket, and got both of these for under 200.00. My next buy was for some Lewmar winches. It seems that one of the #16 2 speeds has gone missing, and was repalced by a #7 buy the PO. It really buged me when on port tack I would have a two speed and on starboard I had to crank the crap out of the single, SO on to ebay, and low and behold I found a replacement, but was outbid at the last moment (I sometimes find counting down on my watch tell the last seconds with my heart pumping hard). So it was another search, and this time I found some with the option of setting my own price. Well it was worth the shot and after a day I got the reply I wanted to hear. Now the ebay listing was for two winches, and I bought them at a good price, but now I have a #7 I don't need, and a 2 speed #16. The list of CRAP goes on and on, From sails (10) extra halyards (4) and allot of electrical equipmet I will never use or install on the boat. I have also found myself really getting into the forums, Its like drinking my coffee in the morning, I wake up, take a shower and I go right to the computer to read new threads. this happens 4 to 6 times per day.
Well thats it for now, I just had to get it out. If I would say somthing to the wife I would be banned for life, and its HER boat:)
Winter on the hard, forums, eBaying, forums, planning upgrades, forums, obsessing about sailing, did I mention forums...yeah, it's pretty much my way of life too. ...Ain't it GREAT!
You don’t happen to have a blue sea panel # 8068 in that pile of electrical stuff that I can take off your hands do you? You can also start selling some of the crap you have to make room for the crap your bidding on.
You are the twin that was seperated at berth. I do a fairly good job about what I buy on ebay but I still cause myself issues. I bought a batch o crap which had a hatch support in it, now I have four gudgeons and pintles for sunfish too. I bought a dual battery status tester from CD then bought a small power panel with one in it. I am addicted to cabin lights and teak. Westmarine on ebay loves me, when I win I always want several. Spring is coming.
I'm doing a lot of the same things. In my down time at work I read these forums, research things I need for my new boat, what I can do, where to buy, prices, ebay, etc. I've been spending most of my weekends working on the boat and I have plenty to keep me busy. Any of that stuff you want to sell? I just bought my boat a few weeks ago and might be able to use some gear.

There's nothing wrong with buying a lot of sailing stuff on the computer but waking up and taking a shower 4 to 6 times a day? You need to get that narcolepsy under control. Your water bill must be outrageous.
I will be happy to put a list of my CRAP together and list it here before I do anything else with it. Yes I have the #7 still, I just got the #16's today, so its still on the boat. I will put you down first on the winch list right after my wife:) Sorry I had to do it.
List of stuff I will be selling this spring. KVH Digital Compass Wind Knot Meter and direction Knot Meter Ratchet Blocks Fiddle Blocks Fiddle blocks with cam, and ratchet Halyards -80ft Sails Main- Capri 25 100-135 Capri 155- North Spinnaker #16 Lewmar 2 speed #7 Lewmar Solar Panel 5w Misc Sheets And allot more.
I will get a list together and post it on the correct forum w/ photos. Most everything will be brand New, Or will have been just sitting on the boat for the last year. Except for the winches.
Thanks to everyone who also has this problem, and yes If its on Ebay and I really want it I will bid on it, Unless you email me. I'm fair.

If each of us would do just that with the unwanted excess boat stuff we've all got under foot, we could help each other save some boat bucks, and help clear out each other's garages at the same time. And it's free!!! I've bought several items through our Swap Meet forum with great results. (I know I've sold some stuff to a few of you too, but I can't remember if we did it through the Swap Meet forum or more directly.)
If you're unsure how much to ask, but know you want it gone, ask for offers by some date on the Swap Meet forum, and let others bid on it like our own mini-eBay.
And here's a tip for Web-savy frugal sailors (a.k.a. cheapskates): To post small photos for free, you can start a post on TrailerSailor, upload a small JPEG to go with it, copy the link they give you to the image on their server, and then cancel the post on TrailerSailor. Paste that link into your ad here. Your photo will stay on their server for (x?) weeks, and you'll know when they've deleted it, because the photo will disappear from your ad here.
So type up those ads! Be sure to include all the info you'd want to know if you were considering buying it (again). If nothing else, you can get the admiral off your case for a little while by convincing her you're at least trying to clean up your act.
This winter has been unbelievably warm and so I have been sailing thru the winter. Some of the days it has been in the 30s but today it was in the low 60s !
Even so, I have been buying some stuff as well and making some mods. Anything that has to do with the boat, i have been doing - same as yopu, checking out the forums, websites, etc. I keep thinking of that commercial about the guy who suddenly sees on his PC screen the message that says - 'You have reached the end of the Internet !" What a nightmare !
Given all that you have bought, maybe you should spend your time researching some charters or sailboat rentals where it is warm this winter and take a week's vacation to get out on a sailboat.
My only real concern is keeping the spouse alarm in the standby mode. If i talk too much about sailing or walk in the door or mailorder drop off with some purchases, I have to be concerned with the alarm going off. Right now, there is no plans to move into the doghouse, so I am doing okay. the key is planning - need to plant the seeds gently about issues that I need to address and doing that real early so that when the time comes for say a new motor...I do not have to also shop for a blanket for the doghouse.
