Do we have any sailors from Southport, NC? I might be moving as part of my job to Southport, NC. This may be occurring as soon as this summer. Basically what I'd like to know is what is the sailing like? I'm sure it's better than what I have now, a small reservoir in Ohio. Do you have any recommendations for where to find a slip for the boat? What do slips cost, too?
I'm really excited about the possibility of being able to sail on some big water, but I know realistically that this move is still far from decided.
Hello Ben, I was born and raised in Southport, grew up as a commercial fisherman like my father and his father and his father whom was lost at sea on a schooner off Southport. Guess you could say; I'm the son of a son of a sailor. Anyway, left Southport in 78 for the Navy but I still have many ties there, lots of family. I own a dock with 2 slips in the "old Yacht Basin" in Southport. Although I live in Atlanta, I'm looking to buy some land there to build on when I retire again. My two slips are rented out right now one to a shrimp boat and the other to a 26' sailboat, so I can't help you there. My cousins own some slips I'll check with them. The Southport Marina (next to the Old Yacht Basin is going through an overhaul, they should have open slips.
It may take a little getting use to the strong currents of the river coming from a lake, but over time you will. Plenty of sailing grounds either in the Cape Fear River, Atlantic, or a cruise on the ICW.
The first dock in the picture is mine, my cousin owns the yellow building and docks.
I don't know anything about Southport, Ben, but just looked on a map and it looks really neat. It's just a short way up a river, and Cape Fear on the Atlantic Ocean is right around the corner. It looks like there are inlets every 5-10 miles along the Atlantic coast, so you can make short passages to different locations, and still have shelter close at hand. My map shows 7 marinas, and most of them appear to be near Wrightsville Beach, which looks to be about 23 miles north of Southport. Myrtle Beach appears to be about 50 miles southwest of Southport. I hope the opportunity works out for you guys. It looks like a great place to hang out!
