For those of us who frequent Harbor Freight, in the flyer that ends 27 Feb there is an underwater camera and monitor for $100.00 includes 65 ft of cable, battery etc. Has anyone played with one of these? If it could be manuvered easily enough it would be good for looking at centerboards etc.

One of my more eccentric marina neighbors mounted high powered lights and an underwater color camera on his hull and hooked it up to a flat screen monitor in the master stateroom so he can lay in bed and watch fish at night. Apparently his romantic life leaves a lot to be desired.

I've thought about these as well. Seems like it would be a cool toy to have on the boat. Check the anchor, dive location, or just watch fish swim by.

Found this discussion by googling it; http://www.lake-link.com/boards/boards/viewposts.cfm?Thread_ID=38177&StartRow=1&SortOrder=DESC&RecordsToDisplay=15

No good in the St Johns river where visibility is measured in Milimeters! Sounds pretty cool for other locations.

I'd love to play around with one of those but in the waters around the NY Bight where I sail the visiblity is next to zero.

Just bought one today. It works great in the livingroom, hope it works u/w off Long Beach tomorrow. Full report and review after giving it a "sea trial".

Dear "inquiring minds":

Yeah, it worked, but with one BIIIIG negative: it only "sees" in one direction, you can't maneuver the camera to point around the clock. So it's history with me. I traded it with my dive club: it goes into our annual banquet lottery in exchange for a free dive trip. Dollar for dollar it's a wash.

Thanks for the update! When is that banquet?

Hadn't thought about the 'steerable' issue. Was image and field of view adequate to provide basic info on bottom structure and potentially view anchor set?

It's the annual California Wreck Divers competition awards banquet, held each year at the Harbor Restaurant in Marina del Rey, CA. This year's guest speaker is Robert Marx.
The image from the camera is somewhat blurry unless you have absolute crystal clear water. No way to check anchor setting because you can't "aim" the camera lense. It "looks" in one direction only.
