I only have need for a depth finder on the rare occasions I anchor, so I didn't want to go to the trouble and expense of installing hull transducers, wiring to the battery, etc. My solution was a product made by Humminbird: a SMARTCAST RF10 Wireless Fishfiner. It's totally portable, requires only AA batteries, reads depth, bottom contour to 100', and fish. Works for me!
Frank...For depth while anchoring, my rope anchor rode has color coded markers tucked into the strands at regular intervals along its entire 250' length. This lets me know both how deep the water is and how much rode to let out. Although mine are store bought, you can make these markers rather easily from the red drawstring of a plastic kitchen garbage bag.
