Hi All, from a previous post, you might remember that I was trying to clean up the yellow hazy crazying Contest 100.. Well I got it part of the way with MAAS chrome cleaner. The surface is now smooth, but the hazy/crazying is deep in the plexiglass. The light was burned out as well. Well I just picked up an bright LED with leads coming off it and bedded that into the light finger, and will now try a three step buffing well process I use for polishing custom knives. If that does not work I will run it as is. I just can't bring myself to throw away a perfectly good compass. I'll post pics when down. Cheers.
Hi Don, not only am I not going to throw it away, I am putting it back on the boat. The only thing that really bothers me is that they put the light right were you need to look. It might be gone season after next but it is low on the priorities now. With all work I am doing to the mast, I figure that I will pretty much blow my budget for the year. Cheers.
The only reason I replaced my compass was because my wife asked me what I wanted for my birthday one year and, when confronted with a questions like this, I usually select an item from my "nice to have, but not really necessary" list.

Find me a boat owner who doesn't have a long list like that and I'd call him a liar. Even the most affluent boat owners have a list somewhere, the only difference between those guys and the average guy is they start their list off with "if I could only find the time" whereas the rest of the world starts the list off with "If I had the time and money" Even the guys with the little sailable dingy's are thinking about beverage holders. dw
If the plexiglass dome is not clear, it is something you have to live with day in and day out. I have found that driving my car to work everyday , eventually after many years, the windshied has all these micro-pits. On an old Integra I used to own, i decided to get the windshied replaced for the above reason alone. It had no cracks. It was one of the best improvements I ever made to a car. It was suc a difference. Okay, this is not such a great example/comparison to your issue with the compass.
My suggestion: If it really kills you to replace the compass because you like it mechanically, why not compromise. Buy another one from the same manufacturer. You will be served fine by the new one as well.
Hi Larry, Last night I use a three step polishing process and got most of the hazing out. There are still micro crazing, but I can now see straight past that. I took before and after pictures but you just can't see the difference in the pics so it would be a waste of server space to post them. It will just fine now. Cheers.
Great ! Now you can spend the money for a new compass on some other boat stuff !
Similar issue, I guess, to the posting regarding painting the hull. Sometimes, it is just a question of putting more time/elbow grease into getting the original matls/gel coat prepped to shine and then going over it several times. My gel coat is okay but envious of others photos. Working on other projects right now but will get to that job eventually.
