My husband & I just spent a week in San Francisco for vacation. While there we saw a single hander C-25 "Solitude" leaving the harbor at the Maritime Museum. I wanted to yell "Hey, can we go with you?" but my husband insisted it would be extremely rude. He's right, I'm sure, but what would you do if another C-25 owner hailed you for a sail?
Kathleen, I would have been more round about. Sugar. Wow, what a great C25 you have. I sail a C25 too in New Jersey. What year is it. Boy, it's really in good shape for a __ model. How does it look below... etc. You're bound to get an invite, and then you can go get the salutory beer.
P.S. I had kind of the reverse thing happen to me in Sausalito. My buddy and I were sniffing around the marina while our wives were "shopping" in Sausalito. We started talking to a guy with a gorgeous sailboat who was planning to go out but his crew had apparently stood him up. He offered us a sail. Unfortunately, we had to decline, or accept immediate divorce.
Can the association set up a list of members willing to give rides to prospective buyers, owners vieiting an area, etc? I am on Lake Grapevine in Texas next to DFW airport and invite anyone that is in the area to go for a ride!
I'm in central California in a little lake (pond to you Easterners) and would be glad to have anyone come on my boat. Will be at Hunington lake in mid July for the high sierra regatta. With advanced notice I might be able to convince my wife to let me trailer to SF bay for a week end.
Might go to Jueno Alaska this summer if anyone is there with a boat.
I was leaving a hotel dock with some friends a few years back. There was a middle aged woman with her husband in lounge chairs on the dock and she was watching us very closely. We got on the boat and started sliding out, past where they were sitting. She was watching us so intently that, as I slide past her, I asked if she wanted to go sailing. "Yes!" was the instant reply, so we spun around and went back to the dock.
She asked if she could bring her whole family. That's when I realized that the two very attractive teenage girls in bikinis were related. The four of them piled on board and we all had a great afternoon sailing. Mom and dad were in town, staying at the hotel, visiting the girls who were attending the local college.
As an old married man I considered the two kids as a great addition to the local schenery but my crew, who were both younger and single, took considerably more interest in them.
This was in Lake Mendota of Madison Wisconsin, the dock was at the Edgewater Hotel.
Kathleen - Sorry it didn't work out with Solitude (maybe that's why its named that), but had you been 1/4 mile west and the timing was right, my '84 Catalina Phredde accepts crew regularly. My girlfiend and I enjoy taking people out on the bay, especially first timers. It can be such a great experience, that sharing it is a joy in itself.
And that reminds me of a trip to Hawaii as a teenager where a stranger approached me on the beach and invited me out sailing. Parents today would never allow it, with good reason, but that experience helped me appreciate the sport a great deal, even after the third degree sunburn. It sure beat the heck out of El Toro's on the local resevoir.
If any of you members are coming to town, drop me a note and well see if the schedules work out.
Thanks everyone for the feedback. I would definitely take someone along who asked or even hinted around but especially another C-25 owner. We're always inviting people to go sailing. And I always have plenty of beer! (And snacks). So if you see us feel free to join us!
Phredde, I sail an 89 C25 tall/wing presently on Lake Perris, near Riverside (SoCal). We have family up in Walnut Creek and Stockton. We drive up there at least 3 times per year. Will again be up in the area this summer and at Christmas. Sailed on an Oday out of Coyote Point last Christmas (12/16) courtesy of a good friend of my brother in law. Light air that day but fantastic anyway. Would really like to crew/sail with anyone anytime I can while up there (beats hanging around with not much to do!!). Likewise, wouldn't hesitate to leave the house to go sailing whenever some happened to be in town. I really like this idea of inviting anyone to sail whenever..... Gary

Madison? I've been stuck in Madison (don't take that the wrong way) on a project for the past 7 months, with about 5 months to go (sans weekends). Are you permanently on the lake, or did you just "drop in"?

I'm just an intermediate, mostly self taught type sailor, and Phredde still has plenty of deferred maintenance, but we are both pretty sturdy (Phredde probably more than me) and so far we've been able to live up to the boat's motto: Nobody Died!
