On close inspection of Pie Sees 2 rig the starboard spreader pole has been bent back a little (probably as a result of Hurricane Ivan 18 months ago). PS2 is a 1987 so the spreader brackets are stainless and appear to be ok. The problem has arisen at the aft point where the bracket attached to the mast, and the mast at that point has bent in (but only by a very little). Do you think I need to go ahead and get a new mast, or is it not that great a problem due to the compression post?
It might not be a bad idea to replace the stick. It would be fairly cheap if you only need the extrusion. You could get the "free" shipping option by waiting for a boat headed to your area and having it piggyback.
If it does fail, it will likely be a spectacular event resulting in loss of sails and possibly collateral damage as well. It also depends how you sail. I like to push it from time to time and having a dinged mast is not my idea of a good thing.

He might not be able to use the piggyback option since, unlike some of us , his homeport actually is the Cayman Islands!
For peace of mind you might consider a sleeve over the affected area. Not sure if that would be inside or outside, but I have heard of it being done. It sure would be cheaper than an entire mast.
I've ordered a new mast extrusion from CD. It was about $650. We can't insure older boats in Cayman due to the hurricane risks - it would cost about $1,000 a year. I'll keep sailing in the meantime and hope for the best!
