Has anyone used the synthetic board that West Marine sells. I thought of using it as backing behind my new gudgeons. Also my outboard bracket in on the starboard side so the bolts go thru the transom and the inner liner do you think the backing supports that CD sells are necessary. I have an 84 SR fin keel hull # 4600
Check out the recent posts by Larry R. on the C25-specific forum. He recently installed a new Garhauer 4-spring mount and goes into some detail about Starboard, backing washers, and so on. Good reading.
Digressing to bikes: Back in the day, when I was on active duty in the Navy, I was stationed with a kid from Detroit who was a total bike fiend. Trouble was, his income didn't match his tastes (he rode around on a Kawasaki 750 - not cheap, but not what he really wanted either). He was always looking for bargains.
One day he went to an estate sale where they advertised a "box of motorcycle parts" as one of the items being auctioned. He was the only bidder on it (site unseen!), and brought back to the barracks a larger-than-coffin-sized box that was nailed shut. When he opened the thing - inside was an oil-cloth wrapped, disassembled but complete 1934 Indian bike. No s***. All it needed was rubber and gaskets. He's probably still grinning about it.
I have details on my website using the Starboard/Polymer Board material for the bracket mounting, covering a hole where the depthfinder was located and also as a support for a RAM Swing Mount for fishfinder...oh ! Also my solar controller is mounted to a polymer Board as well. This material was bought at West Marine - they call it marine lumber but it's made of a polymer matl and some call it Starboard - a different mfr. It is UV resistant as frank pointed out in a much earlier posting.
By the way, I purchased the reinforcing channels from CD along with a new 4 spring Garhauer bracket. On my boat, the channels did not fit on the inside transom area no matter how I tried to arrange them. Maybe they work on some models and not others but they are on the Cat 25 CD website.
Forgot to answer your question regarding are the backing plates/reinforced channels that CD sells necessary for insode the transom. Well...if you use Starboard or can fit the reinforcing channels they have got to be of benefit but...the old Honda 4-stroke was on my boat for 12 years and the transom looks fine and there was no addl reinforcement on the outside or inside the transom. When I recently changed to the 4 spring bracket, I reinforced the outside with the polymer matl (see website), I only used washers on the inside since the channels did not fit. The mount is rock solid. transom has no mnoticeable deterioration or curvature. Even stood on the motor to try and get it to release from lower position when the bracket was stiff during initial install. Not bracket is fine, works well and ..that's about it. Happy sailing.
'56 Panhead! w/original rigid frame, mousetrap included. This must have been around '77. (I'm a little fatter now) The bike & I are of the same vintage.

I now have a Santee rigid frame fatbob tanks and a shorter sissy bar. Paid 1700 for it in 76. I too am a little heavier and shorter hair but being in the wind still can't be beat.
