Can anyone offer recommendations for trailor sailor friendly marinas in Southern California, L.A. area? How much does it cost to use boat ramp / boat lift? I've sailed in Santa Cruz Bay, is sailing off of LA more choppy / windy?

Thanks,
Kurt

Sailing off Southern CA should be significantly less choppy and less windy on average. Of course depending on season you will still find windy, choppy days. Average summer conditions are NW afternoon winds 10 to 12, seas 1 to 2 on top of a 3 foot W swell. April is often our windiest month, expect more like 15 knots plus.

Depending on where you want to go there are numerous launch ramps from Ventura to San Diego. This web site lists them all

http://www.sailorschoice.com/Harbors.htm

My favorites are Cabrillo in San Pedro Harbor if you are going to Catalina, Dana Point (beautiful harbor, good launch ramp, guest slips, lots to see and do, still close to Catalina), or Mission Bay in San Diego. If you come all the way down here be sure to contact me, I can help you get a guest slip and I'll show you the guest anchorage and you can sail around and try to keep up with Indiscipline while I show you where to go around here.

I have trailered to Mission Bay, Cabrillo Beach, and Marina Del Rey so far.

Marina Del Rey charges 6 or 7 dollars to park each time you enter, but they have really nice guest dock for $12.50 a day, which includes gate and bathroom/shower key, fresh water and electric hook-up. Best deal I've seen anywhere. Nice park next to the docks and a grocery store within walking distance. Good ramp too, I've seen many fin keels launched and retrieved there.

Cabrillo Beach charges $9 a day to park, forget about getting a slip unless you plan far in advance, but there is an anchorage in the same area. Don't forget to contact LA Harbor Patrol if you plan to anchor or they will contact you. Good starting point for Catalina through Angel's Gate. LA Harbor is a fascinating place all of it's own.

Mission Bay has nice ramps for no charge. Great sailing in and out of the bay, half day sail to San Diego Bay and the friendliest group of Catalina sailors you will find anywhere!
