They always say to be careful what you wish for. Here's proof.
I was just notified by the U.S. Army Reserve that I have been selected for a slot in the Arabic language school at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA. I'm due to be there in a month. Talk about a good news/bad news situation, this one is it. Monterey - How bad can life be?
The reality is that my new (to me) C25, that is currently taking up slip space on the Potomac River, needs to come out of the water for the foreseeable future. Which means finding a trailer (which I don't have) and storage space (which I do have).
I've thought of dragging the boat out to CA with me, but I drive a Saturn Vue with 110,000 miles on it, and 1500 lbs. of towing capacity. I didn't think that way for very long. Sigh.
At least I get to move the renaming ceremony up some. I don't want Chimera/TBA sitting in the driveway looking like an afterthought.
It sure would be nice if one of our members in the Chesapeake Bay area who has a trailer would use it to help one of our servicemen transport his boat to his storage lot. That way, all he'd have to do is figure out some way to unload the boat from the trailor. It sounds like a worthwhile way to spend a Saturday.
Rick - I was hoping to team up with you this Spring seeing how close we are on opposite sides of the Potomac River. Well...you still have a month. maybe we should figure out a day to get out there.
As far as storage ...trailoring is one thing but Steve brings up a good point...how do you then get it off the trailor onto a stand if at your house. Drydocking at a marina...well your marina supposedly has even a longer wait list for drydocking since they have limited park land available and it's presently all filled up. My marina and others around us also do not have drydocking capability. The marinas south of us, some are under bridges that have low clearances. However, maybe the Fort Washington marina has drydocking available, though, it's on the other side of the river for you. Other possibility is way down the river are a few marinas down by Colonial Beach and they do have storage capability. A boat mechanic that worked on my boat with PO for past 4 years lives down that way and I rememeber him suggesting drydocking my boat down there if I ever wanted some work done like painting or rewiring the mast, etc. Anyway, that is a possibility and it's a good sail to end your short season.
Rick - Once you are out here - please feel free to contact me if you want to go sailing. I'm about an hour and half up the coast. This time of year, when you'll be out here, the sailing on SF Bay is pretty darn good!
Good luck Rick. My cousin graduated from the school about a year ago. He's currently using his new language skills in Iraq. Good luck with your boat and your new language instruction.
I keep my boat at Flag Harbor Yacht Haven, about 15 miles north of the Solomons, and I'm sure they have dry dock space available. You can find them at www.flagharbor.com
I turned down an offer to go there in 59....Dumb kid...Didn't want to get into anything I wasn't sure about with the Army...If you have a chance to be in the SFO area we might be able to arrange a sail.
Thanks to all! I have been making some calls, and largely based on this feedback I am more likely to do the long-term drydock thing. My wife is suggesting buying a trailer and renting a larger truck to just tow my ride to CA. Nice idea, but it's cheaper to buy another boat!
The nice thing about docking her somewhere other than the Washington Sailing Marina - beside cost - is that my ultimate plan was to put her in the water on or at the Chesapeake next year anyway. This just sort of speeds things up.
I'm withholding judgement on the issue of spare time right now. I suspect that, once into the swing of things I will definitely be in the need for day-trip getaways and getting wet (or not!) is about the best way I know to do that. At the least I can rent....
Besides, this is sort of full circle for me in a way. I learned to SCUBA dive in Monterey Bay many moons ago. It was really, really cold and we couldn't see a thing down there. It's time to try the bay from topside.
Larry - I will keep tabs on my schedule and maybe we can still get together before I take off. I'm trying to get someone in authority (i.e., the junior enlisted folks cutting the orders ) to use some common sense about the complete lack of notice. Always fun.
I spent 21 years in the Army trying to figure out the "sense" anyone uses in the assignments office.
Congrats, on the assignment though. I spent four years at Fort Ord back in the early 80s. Monterey Bay has great sailing and a nice marina. If you have an opportunity, join a diners club of some kind. The restaurants in that area are fabulous. Wine tasting trips on weekends,............heck the list goes on and on. You should also link up with some of our CA brethern. I'm sure they could accomdodate you for weekend sailing.
Rick, congrats, But.........Arabic??????? It occurs to me that your "reward" might be a 1 year trip, "expenses paid" to the sandbox.
I have quite a few friends, mostly Navy riding around with Marines on the ground in Iraq. They are needed because of special skills and Never thought they would be an embedded soldier in a million years.
Just be careful and consider what they are NOT telling you.
