I received a flyer (as some of you may have also) that West Marine has a clearnace sale going on starting 9March06. They have approximately 5 or 6 bottom paints on sale. Some are hefty reductions in price, whereas, others they are only giving off about $20. West Marine's ablative paint, PCA, retails for about $140+ and is on sale for below $$80-$90. I think Trinidad was on sale for about $20 less than normal.
If I am planning on painting this summer, any reason why I should not buy a paint right now and store it till that time ? As long as it is not opened and I stir it sufficiently, shouldn't that be satisfactory ? Or should I wait until the summer before buying the paint because current paints have probably been on the shelf for a year and by the time I use it may require excessive and difficult stirring to get the the settled ingredients properly mixed ?
Turns out...I have the flyer with me at work. It says..Internet, calalog or store but...it is a general flyer offering many products. Unless there is a reason/restriction they do not ship paint (maybe no restriction) then the flyer looks like it applies for purchase all three ways. Prices: WM PCA Reg $144.99 on sale for $69.77/gal.
Similarly: Bottomkote ACT reg $109.99 sale $69.99; Petit Hydrocoat Reg $109.99 sale $89.99; Vivid Bright Colored Reg $179.99 sale $ 159.99; Trinidad SR Reg $199.99 (Ouch !) Sale $179.99; Ultima SR Reg $ 189.99 Sale $169.99; WM CPP Plus Reg $89.99 sale $79.99; Bottomshield $69.99 sale $59.99; CPP $89.99 Sale $79.99 Interlux Micron Extra $4199.99 sale $184.99; Interlux Interprotect2000-E $79.99 sale $69.99 and Interlux Bottomkotew/Igarol $99.99 sale $89.99. Starts 9mar and thru 19Mar while quantities last.
I stopped at BoatUS/West Marine Store (The store at the Boat US Hqtrs is going to remain with the Boat US name since they are connected with the Hqtrs at the hip) and they explained that the reason the PCA paint is reduced so much in cost has to do with West Marine switching from Interlux to Petit providing basically the same paint. The new ones made by Petit are with the deep blue band at the top of the can. Boat US did not have any of the old PCA (Interlux) gallons left but had 2 qrts of the PCA made by Petit. I believe the sale applies to both PCAs, it is just that they have very little of the new Petit stock on hand and probably the bulk of it will be arriving after the sale. It was recommended that if anyone buys PCA without the dark blue band at the top of the can, then get them to mix the can for at least 10 minutes because it is the older paint and the solids are probably altogether at the bottom of the can.
In regards to ablatives, one marina in my area recommends the WM PCA. The Boat US store says many in the area buy the Interlux Micron Xtra.
