I bought paint last night at WM. I was trying to get the PCA paint since that was one of two that was recommended for my area and the WM sale price was something approaching a 50% reduction in price (ie. $70 vs ~ $150/gallon). But there was very limited supplies in the WM stores near me and I did not try to order on-line , though, I guess that was a possibility. The best I could find was 2 quarts of either red or black and I wanted a gallon of blue. the only WM store that had gallons was not that close, so i decided on the second choice recommended which was Interlux's Micron Extra w/Biolux. This is a copolymer paint that like the ablatives, reduces in thickness with time. Ran into a guy in the store that does boat painting for a living and he also recommended the Micron Extra. He applies it with a roller and then brushes it in for performance. He also indicated that for a 25 foot sailboat, the one gallon should be fine for applying 2 coats. Sale price was no big deal. regular price was a whopping $199/gallon and sale was $15 less.

In my talks in the store with the salesman and the professional painter, my brain cells skipped a beat and usually i am very careful to read labels, etc to know what i am getting into but I got to the store late and it was baout to close and so I just bought it and read the label afterwards.

I thought it was an ablative but it is not. It is similar in how it degrades with time but it is a copolymer and the directions indicate it can be applied over good anti-fouling paint that exists on the hull but indicates if it is a soft paint, then it should be removed completely by sanding, etc. The paint that is on my hull is an ablative and believe it is PCA. It is in relativey good condition - had it pressure washed a few months ago and there is no flaking. But believe all or some of the ablatives are considered soft paints. It looks feels hard to me as any anti-fouling paint I ever used in the past...before ablatives came to be.

So...what experience does anyone have with this sort of thing. My thought is just to light sand the bottom and apply the Micron extra. I was not planning on removing all the present anti-fouling paint. I may also get the bottom painted by the marina rather than do it myself...and so then the question may not be all that important.
